Square Enix to Take Over Tecmo

0 comments

Big news this morning, Square Enix has announced their plan to gain a majority stake in Tecmo. Square is planning to offer stakeholders a 30% premium over the closing price on August 28. Last week Tecmo president Yoshimi Yasuda left the company but the loss did not affect the talks says Sqaure president Yoichi Wada.

According to a press release (via IGN);
"Wada addressed the possibility of synergy between the two companies. He noted that Tecmo has strong global titles, something that has attracted his attention for some time. He also noted that Square Enix is an RPG-focused company, and one wouldn't call action it's strongest field. Wada explained that with this in mind, he's hoping not for cooperative development but for the two firms to "inspire" one-another."

Rumor Mill; KOTOR MMO, Halo 4

0 comments

A few entries for the rumor mill today;

First, more on the KOTOR MMO front, Amazon.com has a new listing for the game. No information is present but an odd listing, quite possibly done by someone bored at work, still interesting. Even more interesting is the platforms listed, Windows XP and Vista. Surely this is just a random fake, an occurance to bait those anticipating the game, but a good rumor mill entry!

Second, a rumor has presented itself tonight stating that Microsoft has hired Gearbox to develop Halo 4 for the next Xbox. Joystiq reports that Gearbox's Randy Pitchford had teased that their next game is something "big." Stating ""When you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one."Do people want a Halo 4, well, the field is split, but do real gamers that care about quality want a Halo produced by someone other than Bungie? The answer is yet to be seen, for now this remains a rumor.

That is the rumor mill for today, more to come as more rumors continue to show.

"New Xbox Experience" to Debut in November

1 comments

A few sources have come up stating that the new dashboard update for the Xbox 360 announced at this year's E3 will launch this November. First, RPG-TV managed to get a preview of the new Xbox experience at Microsoft's London office;

"I'm not sure if this has been confirmed already or not but I was told the new dashboard would arrive in November."

Also, in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine (pg. 64 & 67) there is a preview of the update and they mention that "come November, Microsoft's biggest 360 gambit since the launch itself will be shared with -- and judged by -- the public at large," as well as "questions may remain unanswered until November" all but confirming with the company that the new software will drop then.

It is still to be seen whether November will be the month, but more and more signs are pointing to the New Xbox Experience launching along side your Thanksgiving dinner.

"according to the PR manager for the game, Peter Nguyen, the potentially innovative title will ship "this winter on PS3, X360, and PC." He goes on to say that "Mirror's Edge will not be a timed exclusive for PS3." Can't get any clearer than that, folks."

Team Fortress 2 Updates Coming to 360, None for PS3

0 comments

Kotaku reports that the huge Team Fortress 2 update that recently came to the PC version will soon make its way to the Xbox 360. Date and cost is yet to be announced.

"Owners of the Xbox 360 version of Team Fortress 2 will be scarfing down sandviches and delivering payloads later this year, as Valve is finally bringing all the updates delivered via Steam to the Xbox Live Marketplace. That means new, class-specific Achievements, new unlockable weapons for the Pyro, Medic and Heavy, new gameplay modes and new maps, all on your Xbox 360."

Not mentioned is the PS3 version, which does make sense begin that Gabe Newell has always has a bit of a grudge with the system. More news to come, stay tuned to GPU!

Xbox 360 Rock the Vote

0 comments

Want to redgister to vote but have no idea how or where to do it? Want to get the latest on the presidential race and each convention but don't know where to go? Microsoft and Rock the Vote have teamed up to help you out. Check out the official release below.

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 20, 2008 — A leading gaming and entertainment platform just became a leading platform for change. Microsoft Corp. and Rock the Vote today announced a groundbreaking partnership that will allow Xbox 360 owners to register to vote, participate in presidential polls and voice their opinions to the presidential candidates. It will all happen through Xbox LIVE starting Monday, Aug. 25, the first day of the Democratic National Convention.

“Xbox is a natural partner to help us reach out to youth voters,” said Heather Smith, executive director, Rock the Vote. “To realize our goal of registering 2 million young Americans by this fall, we need to go where young Americans are, and there’s no doubt in our minds that many are on Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE.”

This is the first time that Rock the Vote has joined forces with an entertainment partner such as Xbox to reach voters under 30. Xbox LIVE is the largest online social network connected to the television, with membership totaling 12 million — if Xbox LIVE were a state, it would rank as the country’s seventh largest, giving it approximately 20 electoral votes.

“The Xbox LIVE community is active, vocal and passionate,” said Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox LIVE. “We’re thrilled to partner with Rock the Vote to make it easier than ever for youth voters — and our members — to register and be heard.”

Through the Rock the Vote partnership, Xbox LIVE members will be able to register to vote, voice their opinions to the candidates through an exclusive forum and participate in potentially election-predicting polls. They will also be able to download Rock the Vote public service announcements.

Xbox also will have a presence at both the Democratic and Republican conventions, promoting the Rock the Vote partnership and educating delegates about creating a safer entertainment environment on Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE using the built-in parental controls known as Family Settings. These industry-leading settings allow parents to limit their children’s access to video games and movies and manage their activity and communications on Xbox LIVE. For more information on Family Settings and other safety-enhancing gaming tools and resources, delegates can stop by the Xbox on-site kiosk or visit http://www.xbox.com/isyourfamilyset.

160GB PS3 Bundle Announced for $499

0 comments

Sony has just announced that a bundle will be released for the Playstation 3 that contains a 160GB PS3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a voucher for Pain, and a Dualshock 3 controller all for the low price of $499 coming this November.

For our European brothers and sisters, you can get the 160 GB PS3 without the bundle as well, although I am not sure why you would want to miss out on this great deal.

The details of the system are still up in the air although Joystiq is reporting that it looks as if this PS3 will just have the 2 USB ports and no backwards compatibility. Still a great deal for those of you looking to get a Playstation.

Hit the jump for the entire press release with specs.

Sony Computer Entertainment America Announces Limited-Edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM) PLAYSTATION(R)3 Bundle Featuring New 160GB PS3(TM) System

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced plans to introduce a new 160GB PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system in North America as part of the limited-edition Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM) PS3 system bundle. The increased storage size enables entertainment enthusiasts to store even more movies, television shows, and games downloaded from PLAYSTATION(R)Network, as well as more videos, music, and photos from their personal collection. Slated to launch in November for $499.99 (MSRP), the 160GB PS3 system will come bundled with the hit game, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune(TM), a PLAYSTATION Network voucher for PAIN, and a DUALSHOCK(R)3 wireless controller. The previously announced 80GB PS3 system ($399.99 MSRP) has started shipping to retailers.

"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."

The Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3 bundle includes the following components:

The search turns deadly when Drake becomes stranded on the island and hunted by mercenaries. Outnumbered and outgunned, Drake and his companions must fight to survive as they begin to unravel the terrible secrets hidden on the Island.

— PAIN PLAYSTATION Network Voucher* — PAIN boldly tackles a rarely explored area of video-gaming ... comedy. The unique mechanic of the game allows the player to load a character into a human-sized, ultra-powerful slingshot, and fire the character into an active, physics-controlled environment, filled with precarious and humorous situations. Download PAIN from PLAYSTATION Store (http://store.playstation.com) to your PS3 system with the included voucher.
— DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller — DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller provides the most intuitive game play experience with pressure sensors in each action button and the inclusion of the highly sensitive SIXAXIS(TM) motion sensing technology.
